Prior to joining the UX world, I worked as a writer and editor in the world of sports. I covered the Boston Red Sox for Yahoo!, the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh for The Hockey Writers, and then later worked as an editor in Bill Processing at the North Carolina General Assembly. Throughout each of these stops, the one tenet they shared was that effective communication is paramount to success.
As a UX researcher, I keep this maxim in the front of my mind. Great design and great communication are intimately intertwined. If your meaning is lost, then you’re going to have a hard time accomplishing the goals you’ve set out, no matter the medium. I’ve loved this field because I get to do deep dives into the psyches of people and figure out what makes them tick and how they think. At my core, I like to consider myself a problem solver, and that’s really the broad goal behind design, isn’t it?
When I’m not designing, I am passionate about learning new concepts and ideas. I often find myself getting lost down rabbit holes of odd and specific niches, including everything from astrophysics to behavioral science to how to make prison wine (that was an interesting evening). The universe is a curious place, and I’m always looking to explore it as much as I can.
